Comforting Yourself

Everyone:
Over the years, it has become evident that people can become very good at giving to others and not giving to themselves. This led me on a quest to find out about ways that you can comfort yourself.

One resource that I have found useful is Jennifer Louden’s book entitled The Woman’s Comfort Book. Although this is a book about women and self-nurturing, men can utilize the same basic principles for themselves.

Basic Principles of Comforting Yourself:

  • Ask yourself, What brings me a sense of peace?
  • What lets me rest and relax.
  • What is meaningful for me?
  • What is it that brings me back to a point of balance in my life?
  • Who can I be around that fills me with joy?
  • What energizes me?

You can generate a list of your own, or you could make a collage that includes images or words that remind you of ways to achieve self-comfort.

Here’s a list of activities or lack thereof that you might find helpful for ways to nurture, comfort, or de-stress yourself.

  • Taking a walk.
  • Being out in nature.
  • Talking to a trusted friend.
  • Acknowledging when I am overwhelmed and resting to recover.
  • Letting my feelings come up and sitting with them.
  • Practicing Mindfulness in the Moment.
  • Reading relaxing materials.
  • Using de-stressing affirmations.
  • Listening to music I love.
  • Practicing self-care for rest, relaxation, and restoration.

Try and think of 10 ways that you can achieve self-comfort for yourself. Make a list, create a collage of images and words, or put them on a notecard for easy reference when you are overwhelmed or need to care for yourself.

If you are feeling stress, experiencing anxiety, or are depressed and would like to make an appointment to talk and sort things out or work things through, please call.

You can reach Dr. Harb at (916) 225-6311 (voicemail available). Please leave your name and personal phone number so I can call you back for your 20-minute phone consultation. I look forward to talking with you!
