Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)

Dissociation is a fragmentation of the psychic structure of an individual.

When the psyche is fragmented over time, memories become compartmentalized into frozen zones within the psyche that are locked in time. The trauma that the individual experienced then causes triggers, symptomatology, and dissociative states that are parts of the person blocked off from current day functioning. Dissociation causes distress and a lack of continuity in space and time.

If dissociation is created and maintained through childhood without therapeutic intervention, a wide range of clinical problematic symptoms can develop. It is also possible for one memory, depending on the severity, to fracture with the affect, memory, smell, visual, and auditory components of that memory to take time to reconsolidate for the person to feel and reprocess the memory. Tangled neutral networks that fired together when a trauma happened can be untangled with EMDR reprocessing. The protocols for working with dissociation and utilizing EMDR are different than for a one-time incident (e.g., a car accident).

When working with dissociation, it is necessary to screen for dissociation and the levels of dissociation. All parts of you deserve to tell your story, be heard, and heal. If you have experienced a life of neglect, abandonment, trauma and have gaps in your memory, you probably also experience depersonalization, and derealization, along with a variety of other symptoms.

Ego-state therapy and EMDR can help bring relief and healing.
