Basic training really only prepares you to work with healthy clients. But as you become known as an EMDR therapist, more and more complex trauma will come knocking at your door. You need the benefit of someone skillful in the use of EMDR with Complex Trauma and Dissociative Disorders (much more common than usually acknowledged) to be successful in your practice.
Many EMDR clinicians, EMDRIA Certified or not, consult about their Complex PTSD and Dissociative clients because they realize they need clinical support to work successfully with their clients. This is a very rich process that can "clear the minefield' of what is blocking progress and causing ruptures.
I look forward to working with EMDR trained therapists looking for consultation to further their skills that go well beyond basic training.
Most commonly, consultation is begun by therapists who are seeking to become EMDRIA Certified. As a Consultant, I can provide all of the 20 hours of consultation required as part of the process of becoming EMDRIA Certified, documenting whether those hours are individual or group.
Becoming an EMDRIA Certified Therapist
My own Consultation process was such an exciting time for me of really expanding my understanding and use of EMDR Therapy with my clients. I really enjoy helping others gain that same experience of competence and comfort. The framework that I use goes well beyond the specific EMDRIA requirements to ensure your comfortable competence in using EMDR Therapy.
If you choose to begin right after Basic Training, it generally takes about two years before you have done EMDR processing sessions with 25 different clients, along with the minimum of 20 hours of consultation. Consulting with me on your EMDR Therapy work with clients, you’ll get specific suggestions and feedback. When you enter this exciting process with me, our focus will be three-fold.
1. Reading, or rereading, and presenting/discussing the first 11 chapters of Dr. Shapiro’s second edition text to me, while referencing your own clients. Her book is a brilliant resource on what to do in many different situations.
2. Also, the EMDRIA Standards and Training Committee formulated a draft document of six areas of Competency to become Certified. This is such a useful formulation to keep in mind with all clients. You will have the opportunity
to present these areas to me in the context of your own clients.
3. Audio- or video-taping EMDR sessions involving part (or all of) Phases 3-7 (Assessment, Desensitization, Installation, Body Scan, and Closing down) with your clients. Your recording can be sent, or you can supply me with typed verbatim session notes prior to your consultation session. You’ll get LOTS of specific suggestions, feedback, a summary of the consultation, relevant handouts and resource articles. Consultees typically find the feedback richly helpful, and it often leads to resolving stuck work.
Fee Structure:
- Consultation for 60 minutes at $135 (for non-dissociative clients).
- Consultation for 60 minutes at $175 (for client consultation for C-PTSD and Dissociative Identity Disorder).
