Ever enter the never-ended loop of procrastination? It’s time to do that report, speech, phone call but there are other things to do first. Let’s take doing a report as an example.
You: I’m going to start that report today. I’ll start at 8 a.m. and go until I’m finished.
Saboteur: I’ll just hit that snooze button a few times or get up and reset the alarm for 9 a.m.
You: It’s okay, I didn’t get to sleep on time so I really need the sleep.
Saboteur: So happy you’re working with me.
You: Wow, it’s 9 a.m., and I’m still tired. I wonder what that’s about?
Saboteur: I’ll tell you what that’s about. You’ve been working way too hard lately, and you need some rest and downtime.
You: I need some coffee.
Saboteur: Remember that movie that isn’t finished on our movie subscription. Let’s watch a little bit of that while you drink your coffee and get acclimated to the day.
You: Sounds good. Really, after that movie, I ought to clean the desk up before starting in on the report.
Saboteur: Right, a clean desk equals a clean mind. Now you’ve got the idea.
And so it goes, and on and on, with excuses to delay what needs to be done and procrastinate by doing other things until the report – or whatever – doesn’t get done!
